It’s a number that rarely appears on clothing tags — but it determines more about how a linen garment looks, feels, and wears than any other single factor.
Understanding it takes about five minutes. Once you do, you’ll never buy linen the same way again.
What GSM actually means
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It’s a measure of fabric density — how much the fabric weighs per unit of area. A higher GSM means more fibres packed into the weave, which translates to a heavier, more structured, more opaque fabric. A lower GSM means a lighter, sheerer, more flowing result.
The measurement applies to all woven fabrics, but it’s particularly meaningful for linen because linen spans an unusually wide range — from very sheer suiting linens under 100 GSM all the way to heavy upholstery linen above 400 GSM. For clothing, the relevant range is roughly 100 to 250 GSM, and the differences within that range are significant.

Why Canadian weather demands a specific weight
Canada’s climate is more demanding of clothing than most countries. We don’t have the stable warmth of Mediterranean Europe or the consistent heat of Southeast Asia. We have genuinely cold winters, humid summers in many urban centres, and those long transitional seasons — spring and fall — where the temperature can shift dramatically within a single day.
This creates a specific problem for lightweight linen. A 120 GSM linen blouse is wonderful in 30°C heat. But it offers almost nothing when the temperature drops to 15°C, it can become translucent in direct sunlight, and it has so little structure that it tends to look relaxed rather than polished. It’s a one-season fabric in a country that needs more.

How GSM affects the way linen looks and wears
Beyond temperature, GSM affects something less tangible but equally important: how a linen garment carries itself. Lightweight linen drapes. Medium-to-thick linen holds. The difference shows in silhouette.
A cowl neck that’s meant to fall in soft folds needs enough weight to do that without collapsing. Wide-leg trousers need structure to drape cleanly at the ankle rather than crumpling at the knee. A blouse with a drawstring waist needs fabric with enough body that the gathered section looks intentional rather than bunched. In each of these cases, fabric weight is doing invisible structural work.
This is also why 200 GSM linen photographs well and holds up through a full day of wear. Lightweight linen tends to look better in the morning than in the afternoon — it shifts and softens with movement in a way that can look lived-in within a few hours. Heavier linen maintains its shape considerably longer.
What to look for when buying linen in Canada
Most linen clothing sold in Canada — particularly through fast fashion retailers — doesn’t list GSM at all. When it does, it’s often in the 120–160 GSM range: light enough to feel inexpensive and breezy in-store, but not substantial enough for the kind of year-round wear that justifies a real investment.
When shopping for linen that will work across Canadian seasons, look for brands that are transparent about fabric weight and source their linen specifically — not just “linen” as a material category, but the provenance and weight of the specific fabric used. French flax, for example, is grown in a climate that produces longer, stronger fibres than linen grown in warmer regions — which affects both the drape and the durability of the finished fabric.
A few practical questions worth asking before buying:
— What is the GSM of this fabric?
— Has it been pre-washed to reduce shrinkage?
— Where is the linen fibre sourced from?
— Is the fabric opaque at the weight offered?
If a brand can’t answer those questions clearly, the fabric likely isn’t worth the price they’re charging for it.
Why Linenia uses 200 GSM
When we were developing Linenia, the GSM decision was the first and most deliberate choice we made. We wanted pieces that could genuinely function across the Canadian calendar — not just in July, but in April and October too. We wanted fabric that would be opaque in lighter colours, structured enough to hold a silhouette, and breathable enough to wear indoors in a heated Canadian home without discomfort.
200 GSM French flax meets all of those requirements. It’s the middle of the medium-to-thick range — substantial without being heavy, breathable without being sheer. We pre-wash the fabric before cutting and sewing, which softens the fibres and removes most of the shrinkage risk, so pieces arrive ready to wear rather than requiring a break-in period.
It’s not the cheapest fabric weight to work with. Heavier fabric costs more per metre, and pre-washing adds an additional step. But for clothing designed to be worn eight or nine months of the year and to improve with each wash, it’s the weight that makes the most sense — for the climate, and for the long-term value of the garment.
